    Cynthia Woods Mitchell

We would like to take a moment to extend to the Mitchell family our deepest condolences. Kent and Mark Mitchell’s mother passed away early Sunday morning, December 27. Mrs. Mitchell was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2002.

The funeral was a private ceremony, with a memorial service held on January 4 in Galveston, Texas. The family requested that, instead of flowers, donations be made to either The George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Brain Disorders or The George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. Either of these research centers welcome donations anytime and all charitable gifts are greatly appreciated. Please see contact details below.

    BHI Winter Wonderland

    2009 Resale Leaders

Meteorologists called for light snow.... but Bald Head Island got a Winter Wonderland! We had a great time playing in the snow and enjoying such a rare Island event this past weekend. The gorgeous white blanket over our unique Island has quickly melted away, but it will long stand in our minds as a day to remember! Please click here to view photos of our Bald Head Island Winter Wonderland.

    Golf Course Historic Discovery

Amidst the much anticipated renovations to Bald Head Island’s beautiful golf course comes a striking and quite possibly historical find. Construction crews unearthed skeletal remains that, according to preliminary investigation, actually date back to the 19th century! Foul play is not suspected, and state archaeologists are digging to see how extensive these finding are. We hope to have some news over the next two weeks that determines the origins of this fascinating find. There is much speculation that this site may have been a burial ground, due to the manner in which the skeletal remains were laid to rest. For more local news coverage on this incredible find, please visit www.WECT.com.

As a result of the leadership of the new Village Council and the recent on-Island retreat, new committees have been formed and prior committees joined together in one common goal – to benefit our Island and its stakeholders. The Village Council’s goal of making our resources more efficient has yielded positive results thus far. Working together is the only way to keep things moving in a positive direction, which is why the Council is calling on Island Stakeholders to join in. They are seeking fresh ideas and new strategies to carry us all forward.

The following are now official Village Committees:

  • Communications
  • Finance
  • Parks & Recreation
  • Public Safety & Transportation
  • Public Works & Utilities
  • Shoreline Protection

  • To view each new committee charge/task, please click here.

With the changes to committee charges and appointments, it has been requested that all committee volunteers complete a new Committee Appointment Application. To do so, please pick up an application from Village Hall or download an application from www.villagebhi.org.

For questions please contact Debbie Talbert, Village Clerk at 910.457.9700 or at dtalbert@villagebhi.org.

Wendy Wilmot Properties attended a conference featuring MarTech and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World over the past week in Las Vegas. The MarTech event focused on new ways to use technology and gain cutting edge exposure on the internet. We also were able to attend the presentation of Keynote Speaker, Guy Kawasaki. Guy is a managing director of Garage Technology Ventures and was previously with Apple Computer developing Macintosh. You can read more about Guy Kawasaki at www.GuyKawasaki.com.

There were over 700 attendees from several different countries around the world in attendance at the LeadingRE Conference. Wendy Wilmot Properties used this opportunity to learn, network and promote the wonders of Bald Head Island to all.

We look forward to integrating the new technologies and the fresh ideas gained over this past week. If you have any questions about Leading Real Estate Companies of the World or how being a part of this large, international organization benefits your association with WWP, please let us know. We would be happy to discuss our affiliation with such an incredible and expansive member owned organization.

Wendy Wilmot Properties has listed 2 Keelson Row, better known as Theodosia’s. We have been working to clean up the establishment and have donated many of the interior items to Habitat for Humanity. It is currently unfurnished and in need of some TLC, but she has great potential.

Wouldn’t it be great to resurrect 2 Keelson Row as a new Bed & Breakfast? Or what about a private 10 bedroom family retreat? It could be a wonderful rental!

Stop by our Open House and take a peek. For information please check our website.

Dave Shadday Most of you know Dave Shadday – upbeat optimist, avid golfer, friend to all. Over the past year, we have all watched Dave’s health decline rather rapidly, to the point that he was told that he needed a lung transplant. Dave was able to get his affairs in order very quickly and move near Duke Hospital, where for the last few months he has undergone a barrage of testing, medications, and physical therapy to prepare him for the transplants that would hopefully save his life. He has had many close calls and scares, but through it all he has kept a positive attitude.

A few weeks ago, it happened – a lung for Dave! He was able to get the lung transplanted successfully and has begun the rough journey to recovery. After the pains of surgery and discomforts of being in ICU where he got little rest or food between tests, therapy, and medications, Dave’s morale had begun to drop last week. It has been painful and frustrating for Dave, as well as his friends and family, to see him suffer.

However, the past few days have seen an enormous improvement in Dave’s attitude and personal motivation. He has chosen to get out of the bed and walk, and seems to be slowly returning to his normal “can-do” self. We all want to see him get stronger quickly, and maintaining a positive attitude will play a major role in doing so. We encourage everyone to send Dave a card, a text, and maybe even a photo of you on the Island or playing golf. Let’s keep him connected to Bald Head Island and give him something to look forward to!

Please send any cards, photos, gifts, etc to:

    Wounded Warriors

This was the third year for Wounded Warriors and it was another success. The personally moving event touched the hearts of those in attendance and prompted us to appreciate the many freedoms we exercise at the expense of those fighting for it. Open House Caps Banned in Stage II

The Stage II Association recently informed WWP that they would no longer allow real estate agents or owners to use the dark blue “ Open House” bollard caps on homes in Stage II.

While this has not been an issue for the past ten years and has been used by all real estate companies, Cindy Capps, Secretary of the Stage II Association, informed us that this is a covenant restriction and that if a real estate agent violates this covenant, a letter will go to the property owner. Below is the language of the restriction.

    Per the Association:

“As stated in the Protective Covenants of Stage Two Association, recorded in Book 1045, Page 676, Brunswick County Registry, in Paragraph 20, Page 12 “no commercial signs, including “For Sale” or “For Rent” signs shall be erected or maintained on any Lot or on the Common Properties nor shall any such sign be allowed within any Living Unit or structure if readily visible from any Living Unit or street.” Placement of “signage” on Stage Two properties is in clear violation of the Covenants for Stage Two Association of Bald Head Island.

The Association will provide a copy of the letter notifying property owners of the violation to the real estate agent; however, the Association will look to the property owner to ensure compliance.”

We will continue to hold Open Houses without the dark blue caps in Stage II, so when you see a yellow cart please stop in! Please feel free to contact us. Or call Cindy Capps or Joyce Fulton, President of the Stage II Association, at 910-457-5000.

Wendy Wilmot Properties is pleased to bring two new team members on board, both of whom are full-time Bald Head Island residents. John “JP” Pitera and Buddy Lawrence are bringing fresh ideas and new energies to our team. We are excited by their enthusiasm and passion for the Island, and look forward to working side by side with them for years to come!

    John Pitera

John and his wife, Andrea, moved to BHI as full time residents almost 10 years ago after closing their furniture store in Connecticut. It was love at first sight for them and BHI.

They built their first house on south beach and after six years on the ocean sold it and built their second house on the marsh at Middle Island.

John has been very active on BHI, volunteering for nine years on the fire department and has served for the last six years on the Village Council.

He is also an avid golfer and physical fitness nut. In the past year he ran a marathon in Bar Harbor, Maine, two half marathons in North Carolina and recently did a sprint triathlon in Winston Salem, N.C.

He has also been very active at the BHI Club and is well known around the island.

All that being said his real passion is collecting wine. He has a four thousand bottle wine cellar in his home and loves to spend time talking about wine and the foods that go with it.

He and Andrea enjoy cooking and are known Island-wide for their fantastic home-made pizza. John claims his spaghetti and meatballs, made from a recipe passed down from his Nana, have no match.

John is new to Real Estate sales but knows BHI intimately. He is eager to share his passion for the Island to help you fulfill your Island dreams.

    Buddy Lawrence

Buddy joins our team with great enthusiasm and a sales and service background to match.

He grew up in Greensboro, graduated from Page High School and then onto UNC in Chapel Hill. There, Buddy received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Next stop, The Republic of South Viet Nam where he served a tour of duty with the United States Army as a medical corpsman.

Buddy and his wife, Betty, moved to Warrenton, Virginia where Buddy owned and operated a Chevrolet Dealership until he sold it in 1997. Along the way, he became a board member of a local community bank and later served as its Chairman until his retirement early this year.

Buddy and Betty have been property owners on Bald Head Island since 1998 and have now chosen to make Bald Head their permanent residence. They have three married daughters and five grandchildren. They both enjoy golf, and Buddy loves to get out on his boat and fish the creeks in and around the island.

Buddy’s banking background and intimate knowledge of Bald Head Island will help both buyers and sellers in the current market.

    Dr. Marianne Link (1938 - 2010)
(Article Courtesy of the BHI Association)

Dr. Marianne Link died peacefully in her sleep on April 28th at her Bald Head Island home. She was born on May 20, 1938 in Collingswood, NJ and was the daughter of Karl and Karoline Link.

Her parents predeceased Marianne. She is survived by her brother, Walter Link (Estelle) of Wilmington, NC, and nephews Mark Link (Ingrid) of Atlanta, GA, Michael Link (Joyce) and Christopher Link of Jacksonville, FL. Marianne was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC. She was also a member of AMA, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and California Medical Association.

Marianne was a graduate of Trinity College in Washington, D.C. and Seton Hall Medical School in Jersey City, NJ. She interned at Los Angeles County Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. She practiced as an anesthesiologist for 35 years in Los Angeles until her retirement in 2000. After retirement, she relocated to her beloved Bald Head Island home to be near the ocean.

A mass will be held at 9 AM Tuesday, May 4th at St. Brendan Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Highway W. (U.S. Hwy 17) in Shallotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Brendan's Catholic Church.

Taxpayers to Vote on Deer Management

During last Friday’s Village Council budget meeting, a motion was passed to hold a referendum on deer management in a format that will give ALL taxpayers a vote in how the Village will manage the deer population.

Animal Control is often a very emotional issue that involves not only taxpayer dollars but taxpayer philosophies. The question is whether to manage the herd through lethal culling or through immunocontraception with limited culling.

Although many details remain to be worked out, the procedure would have each side prepare a statement presenting their perspective, followed by written rebuttals and then the four documents would be sent to all taxpayers for their vote. This would give each side the opportunity to share their views and would give the taxpayers the privacy to vote their views without social scrutiny.

Confidentiality would be maintained through the use of an outside accounting or legal firm. Hopefully, the whole process will be accomplished within the next six months and will give everyone an equal voice.

In the interim, the Bald Head Island Conservancy will do a deer count and deliver to the Village two reports on the deer population, one in the next few weeks and one in late September/early October.

Mayor Sayre feels strongly that the Village Manager, staff and Council represent all taxpayers and is hopeful that by allowing both sides the opportunity to state their case, a group consensus can be reached and we can respect each other’s differences in a way that moves us forward as a community.

    WWP Makes Top Ten List!

The widely distributed magazines emphasized our association with Leading Real Estate Companies of the World (LRE) and our role in the sales of the top ten most expensive homes on Bald Head Island in 2009. Four of our listings were showcased. Theodosia’s Bed and Breakfast was actually on the cover and had its own article!

    Prepare to Sell!

We as a company are really excited about the prospects for this selling season that has already begun in earnest. Internet traffic is up. Island traffic is up. Buyer attitudes are up. We are feeling the turn in this market and we want your property to stand out among the many homes for sale as one targeted by those looking for a home on Bald Head Island.

This is the perfect time to make sure your home is in tip top shape. The pollen season is behind us and all of the live oak leaves are finally all on the ground. We encourage you to pay particular attention to driveways, porches, decks and windows. Blowing leaves off driveways and decks and doing some pressure washing could make a noticeable difference in how people view and remember your Island home.

For those of you who like to “Do-It-Yourself,” the Island Hardware store has great values and a large selection of just about any supplies you could possibly need. For others who may not have the time to get too hands on with such projects, local builders are looking and are ready to get to work for you.

Let us know if you need a list of local vendors.

    Upcoming Events on BHI

There are so many great things to do on Bald Head this summer! We have the upcoming croquet tournament, a new golf course to explore, Memorial Day weekend celebrations, the Annual Fishing Rodeo, and Gala in White. Please make sure to stop in and see our calendar of events. Plan your Bald Head weekend soon!

The Office II and Captain John Munroe competed in the Bald Head Island 19th Annual Fishing Rodeo. It was a fun weekend for everyone. We played a great game and made great friends.

    Happy Father’s Day from WWP!

We wanted to take a moment to stop and give thanks to all of the dedicated and hard working fathers out there. We hope you are taking some time to come down to BHI for a little bit of play time and some serious R&R!

June 12th marked yet another historical day for Bald Head Island. Late night patrols were out on the beaches of BHI, tagging Loggerhead sea turtles, when they came upon some tracks in the sand that made them very excited and nervous at the same time. Why?.... Because, those tracks belonged to a Leatherback sea turtle! This is the first documented case of a Leatherback nesting on BHI. In fact, it was stated in an article from the Conservancy that North Carolina only gets 2 or 3 nests per year. Apparently, she was a massive specimen, taking nearly an hour to cover her nest and almost 10 minutes to get back to the water. The egg chamber has been marked and we should see the hatchlings in about 60 days. While it is unclear exactly how many eggs were in the chamber, Leatherbacks generally deposit approximately 80 eggs per nest.

It is so fascinating that she has chosen to lay her eggs here on our shores, because this means we will see more. Once they hatch from our beaches, those babies will return here to nest each year as they grow!

These endangered sea beauties are the largest turtles on earth, growing sometimes up to seven feet long and exceeding 2,000 pounds! They can dive deeper than any other turtle and can stay down for up to 85 minutes.

What brought them here, nobody knows for sure. But the one thing that is clear, is that we are all excited to witness such an event and welcome her back to our beaches anytime!

Association Meeting – Open House Signage

This Friday, July 9th at 1:00PM, there will be a meeting at the Association Building, which the public may attend. WWP will be there and, for a third time, will be requesting a variance concerning the use of directional signs for Open Houses that are off the main roads.

In this tough market, we need all the help we can get, and homes that lay “off the beaten path” receive no Open House attention, because there is little we can do to show that they can be visited. This is also an issue with homes that are for sale by owner. If you are selling your own home without the assistance of an agent, you have no way to let would-be clients / buyers know that your home is there. To solve this issue, we would like to be able to display a professional directional sign during the posted Open House hours, and then pick them up immediately when the home is closed.

We encourage all who can attend to be there and voice your concern. If you cannot attend this Friday, please send us an email letting us know your position on allowing directional signs to display a home as being an Open House. We thank you for your support.

    Conservancy News

Sometimes we just have to stop a minute, put the great deals and fabulous BHI properties to the side to remember all the reasons they became so fabulous... Bald Head Island. Why is it that BHI is so appealing? What draws people here and then captures them for the long term? Why is staying here well into the Golden Years so important to so many BHI stakeholders? We believe it is the heart and soul of the Island.... the way nature continues to thrive... the dunes continue to undulate around us.... the way the natural forces here preserves us as much as we preserve it. The BHI Conservancy reminds us of that very fact this week in their news letter.

Sea Turtle hatchlings have taken advantage of the warmer weather and have been hatching up to 10 days earlier than they should. Acrobatic sharks off the Frying Pan Shoals, dune-dwelling foxes, unusual Tern sightings, a rather large alligator with an appetite for snakes, and other Island reptiles in hiding from the soaring temperatures mark just a few of the more interesting stories in the past few weeks’ Conservancy articles. If you have not already, please visit bhic.org to sign up for the conservancy newsletter to keep up-to-date on all of the amazing natural events happening in our own backyards!

We have always known how special and unique our Golf Course has been. Bald Head Island’s newly renovated, 18-hole, George Cobb-designed course is not just a place to play golf, but rather an experience to enhance the game. The untamed natural splendor of this course has brought players from across the globe time and again. Basking in the ocean breeze, navigating the rolling dunes and lagoons, one can easily become entranced by the beauty of these surroundings. It is not uncommon for golfers to find themselves being observed by the locals – alligators, foxes, herons, & egrets!

With such an incredible Golf Course located right here, it is hard to believe that it could be any better. This was put to the test this past May, as renovations were being completed. There was much excitement to see what changes the course would undergo. We even had a bit of exhilaration as crews unearthed historic, skeletal remains! Beyond a doubt though, once the changes were complete, the Golf Course was even more stunning than before. It has even attracted the attention of Alan Blondin of TheSunNews.com, who chose Bald Head Island’s Golf Course as his pick for the “Monthly Golf Course Review.”
