SB 110 Terminal Groin Bill 
Has Been Approved!

The laborious efforts of so many have finally paid off!

The SB 110 Terminal Groin bill has been approved thus igniting an imperative alteration in coastal policy act which now removes the 25-year old ban the State has had on the permitting of these “hardened structures”.

This amending of antiquated policy now affords Bald Head Island, as well as a number of coastal communities including Caswell Beach, Oak Island, Ocean Isle Beach, and Figure Eight Island , an ability to minimize the impacts of erosion at inlets. 

Environmental groups were unsuccessful this time in lobbying in opposition of the bill,  citing concerns over possible negative impacts to down drift adjacent shorelines.  These concerns are not lost on us, and SB 110 includes a number of safeguards.

Engineering analysis, agency review, and funding requirements, should ensure that any terminal groin constructed would be necessary and in the public’s best interest.  BHI now possesses another option to protect our precious shoreline, habitat and infrastructure. 

Additionally, a terminal groin may help our situation and conserve state and local tax dollars by reducing ongoing shoreline maintenance costs and preserving state and local resources and tax revenues.

The passing of this bill is a positive turn of events and a victory for those who have worked so hard to ensure the sustainability of our Island. Thank you to all involved in the acceptance of SB 110!

Results of Deer Management Vote

The results are in and over 50% of the taxpayers on Bald Head Island participated, many of which expressed their appreciation of being included in the vote. The voter result was3 to 1 in favor of culling. To stay up-to-date on the issues of deer management on Bald Head Island, please visit the VillageBHI.org.
