APRIL 9th - Grand Opening of the
Conservancy's Barrier Island Study Center
Next Monday, April
9th, will see the doors of the new Study Center on BHI to officially open
to the public. The purpose of the 5000 sqft edifice is to progressively
promote the understanding of barrier islands and how human interactions
effect and influence their sustainability. The BHI conservancy has
stated that approximately 85% of the East & Gulf coasts depend on
barrier islands, such as Bald Head Island, to act as defensive shields
against the onslaught of storms and resulting abrasive seas. According to
the Conservancy, "These vital ecosystems have already begun to
weaken, break up and disappear--a process that is irreversible."
The BHI community
and stakeholders have recognized not only the importance of this
understanding to our own Island's sustainability, but also to its
critical impact on other barrier islands world-wide. With this
understanding, this project raised approximately 97% of its $2.5 million
funds privately!
Join the BHI
community at the Conservancy grounds from 3PM until 5PM to commemorate
and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in BHI's efforts to educate
all on the wonders and intricacies of barrier island living!
