Well, as Paul Harvey used to say, “here’s the rest of the story.” Or, as I should say, here is some insight as to what may have actually happened in my alligator tale from my last e-updates...

 

As most good reporters do, you get a little bit of information, expand that a bit and editorialize the heck out of it. Guilty as charged. Anyway, Suzanne Dorsey of the BHI Conservancy shed some light on the subject, and gave her take on what actually happened. Turns out that my gator was not only not pregnant, but not even female. How wrong could I have been?

 

It seems that this big male was most likely from upstream of the Cape Fear somewhere and was booted out of his home by a bigger gator. I really would not like to meet the big boy that kicked this one out of his home territory! Anyway, it seems our gator, tired and hungry, caught the scent of the food in the homeowner’s raccoon trap and went to investigate. He was later seen on South Beach that same afternoon, and I hope he is long gone by now.

 

I still stick to one part of my story, though: he headed for St. James Plantation and has most likely remarried and settled down again in a nice new lagoon.

 

Bald Head Island, there is just no place I would rather be….

BHI Property Owners to Vote on Deer Management

 

The Village of Bald Head Island is requesting the vote of all property owners, not only registered voters, on the issue of deer management for BHI.  They are asking for your input on how deer management should be handled and how your tax dollars should be spent in doing so. Please, click here to read the letter sent out by the Village this week. If you did not receive a voting ballot by mail, please contact the village at 910-457-9700 to request one be sent. All votes need to be in no later than June 1, 2011.
